Job summary

Countryside Veterinary Clinic of Richmond is seeking veterinary externs to gain hands-on experience in wellness and sick exams, surgery, and dentistry under the guidance of our Medical Director. Externs may shadow any department, including management, with a focus on fourth-year students.

Students will work with the supervising veterinarian to learn histories, physical exams, treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, and surgical procedures, while developing communication skills with the team and

Qualifications

• Duties include wellness and sick exams, surgery, and dentistry under supervision.
• Shadow any department of the hospital, including management.
• Externship is hands-on, especially for 4th year students.
• Clinical experience in histories, exams, treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, and surgical procedures.
• Strong communication with the medical team, staff, and clients.

Responsibilities

• Gain experience gathering patient histories and performing physical exams.
• Assist or observe creation of treatment plans and diagnostics.
• Assist in or perform dental procedures and surgeries as appropriate.
• Communicate effectively with clients and staff throughout care.

Description & Requirements

We are a small practice with a close-knit team. Externs would get a lot of one-on-one time with our Medical Director Dr. Dyer in wellness and sick exams, surgery, and dentistry. If interested, the extern is welcome to shadow any department of the hospital, including management. This externship has the potential to be very hands-on, especially for 4th year.

Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences at Countryside Veterinary Clinic range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
