An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although each NVA hospital is unique, they share common qualities: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Our hospital has a close-knit, family-like atmosphere. We have an experienced managing DVM who handles cases within our capabilities. If we can help the pet, we will bring them in! We invite you to extern with us.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, assisting or performing surgical procedures, and managing patient care. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click HERE for stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
