National Veterinary Associates (NVA) offers a unique externship experience for veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience in a supportive environment. Externs will work closely with veterinarians, learning essential skills in patient management and clinical operations over a period of two to eight weeks. Stipends for travel and living expenses may be available, providing a comprehensive learning opportunity in the pet care field.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital provides veterinary students with a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, all share a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient care. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships at University Animal Clinic.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
