Job summary

NVA General Practice in Kernersville offers externship opportunities for veterinary students to enhance their clinical skills in a walk-in clinic setting. Students will work under the guidance of a supervising veterinarian and gain hands-on experience in tasks such as patient history gathering, physical exams, and surgical procedures.

The externship spans two to eight weeks, accommodating various student schedules, and includes a stipend for travel and living expenses. All veterinary students are encouraged to apply, irrespective of their class year.

Qualifications

• Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education are eligible.
• Must work closely with the supervising veterinarian.

Responsibilities

• Perform physical exams and gather patient histories.

• Provide dental services and assist or perform surgical procedures

Job description

Kernersville Veterinary Hospital is mostly a walk‑in clinic, so students will get to experience a variety of cases. It provides urgent care and wellness appointments, giving veterinary students exposure to many different experiences.

Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in the following core clinical skills:

• Gathering patient histories
• Performing physical exams
• Creation of treatment plans
• Diagnostics
• Dental services
• Observing, assisting, or performing surgical procedures
• Medical management of patients

Additionally, student externs will practice communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
