Job summary

Animal Medical Center of Gahanna offers a veterinary externship for students to gain hands-on clinical experience. You will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to learn patient histories, exams, treatment planning, diagnostics, dentistry, and surgical procedures during a 2–8 week rotation.

Externships are available for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students, with opportunities to participate in client interactions and advanced orthopedic cases in a full-service facility connected

• Strong communication skills with medical team and clients.

Responsibilities

• Gather patient histories and perform physical exams.
• Create treatment plans and order diagnostics.
• Assist or perform surgical procedures and dental services.

Job description

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some things in common: an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

Students will work closely with the supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences at Animal Medical Center of Gahanna range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships are available for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.

We have a 11,000 sq. ft. full-service practice, housing an on-site Humane Society. Students are welcome to stay 2‑8 weeks. During your stay, you can expect to do some of the wellness care and surgical procedures for our on-site shelter animals. There will also be many opportunities to participate in numerous client medical and surgical cases. We also perform advanced orthopedic procedures routinely such as: Fracture Repairs, TPLO, and Tightrope. Hospitals are fully equipped with digital radiography, dental radiography, in‑house Idexx equipment (Sedivue, CBC, Chemistry), Ultrasound, heated surgical tables, fluid pumps, the list goes on...! Externs schedules are flexible. The practice stresses high quality medicine and surgery in full-service, state-of-the-art facility.
