Job summary

National Veterinary Associates seeks veterinary externs for Clark Animal Hospital in Missouri. The externship provides hands-on clinical experience under supervision, including history-taking, exams, treatment planning, diagnostics, dentistry, and surgical observation or participation.

Externships range from two to eight weeks, with a travel/living expense stipend available. Clark Animal Hospital welcomes clinical year students to apply and gain practical skills in a supportive team environment.

Responsibilities

• Gather patient histories and perform physical exams.
• Create and discuss treatment plans with supervising veterinarian.
• Assist or perform dental services and surgical procedures as appropriate.
• Support medical management and client communication.

Job description

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day-to-day operations of the practice, and to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. Although every NVA hospital is unique, we all have some things in common: an environment that is supportive, committed to excellent medicine, and provides exceptional service to animals and the people who love them.

Our hospital has been an established part of the community since 1960. Many of our devoted clients have been with us since our beginning! We are currently in the early stages of designing a new building, only three blocks from our current hospital. The new facility will provide us with an updated space with new opportunities for growth.

Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Clark Animal Hospital are offered to clinical year veterinary students only.
