NVA General Practice offers a valuable externship for veterinary students at Westside Animal Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This experience allows externs to work alongside a team of veterinarians, gaining hands-on experience in patient care, diagnostics, and surgical procedures.
Students will benefit from a structured environment that enhances both their clinical and communication skills. The externship duration ranges from two to eight weeks, with eligibility for a travel/living expense stipend.
Westside Animal Hospital has been AAHA accredited for over 50 years. We have a 3.5‑doctor team supported by 5 RVTs and other well‑trained support staff. Student externs are sure to receive an excellent externship experience at our hospital.
Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
