National Veterinary Associates offers an externship experience for veterinary students at various NVA hospitals. This opportunity allows students to gain hands-on clinical experience while working with supervising veterinarians to develop skills in patient care, diagnostics, and surgical assistance. The externship duration ranges from two to eight weeks, promoting the growth of future veterinary professionals.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students the opportunity to understand the daily operations of the practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common features: a supportive environment committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing medical cases. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
Externship durations typically range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students, regardless of class year, are encouraged to participate in NVA externships.
Veterinary students in the clinical phase of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. Click here to view stipend amounts and details on the stipend program.
