North Country Veterinary Services is a mixed large and small animal general practice hospital with two locations and 8-9 DVMs.
A recent student extern shared:
"The externship at North Country Veterinary Services was exceptional and I learned so much as a 4th-year veterinary student during the 8 weeks I was there. The externship offered me an opportunity to learn new skills, and each veterinarian taught me skills that I am currently using in my rotations. The environment is welcoming and fosters dialogue, which is crucial for learning and communication. I was allowed to follow different veterinarians daily, act independently in conducting physical exams, making diagnoses under supervision, monitoring anesthesia during surgeries, and participating as the primary surgeon in spay and neuter surgeries. I also gained insight into hospital management, finances, and the role of a veterinary manager."
Most externships range from two to eight weeks, depending on schedules. All veterinary students are encouraged to participate in NVA externships. Students in the clinical phase of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend, with North Country Veterinary Services offering a stipend of $1,000.
