Abqpetcarehospital in Bakersfield, California, offers an externship designed for veterinary students to gain hands-on clinical experience. During this externship, students will engage in fundamental surgical and dental procedures and work closely with the hospital staff.

An externship experience at an NVA hospital will give students the unique opportunity to understand the day‑to‑day operations of the practice and to gain valuable hands‑on clinical experience. Coffee Road Animal Hospital and Pet Resort was founded in 1991 and is a full-service veterinary practice located in Bakersfield, CA. Our facility is clean, comfortable, and efficient. Our veterinarians and staff are committed to staying on top of the latest diagnostics, treatments, and wellness programs to maintain our patients’ optimal health. We are a full-service animal hospital that will take both emergency cases as well as less urgent medical, surgical, and dental issues. During your externship, you will gain critical exposure to basic surgical and dental procedures, along with proficiency in basic examinations and development of practical differential diagnoses. Client and staff communications along with appropriate medical record‑keeping techniques will be emphasized as well. In addition, you will observe and assist with the following procedures:
Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks, depending on student and hospital schedules. All veterinary students (regardless of class year) are encouraged to participate in NVA externships. Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. The stipend amount for Coffee Road Animal Hospital is $1,000.
