An externship at NVA provides veterinary students with hands-on clinical experience in a supportive environment focused on animal care. Students will work closely with experienced veterinarians and gain valuable skills in patient care and communication. This opportunity is ideal for those interested in practicing in Alaska post-graduation.
An externship experience at an NVA hospital offers students a unique opportunity to understand the daily operations of a veterinary practice and gain valuable hands-on clinical experience. While each NVA hospital is unique, they share common qualities: a supportive environment, a commitment to excellent medicine, and a focus on providing exceptional service to animals and their owners.
Students will work closely with a supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creating treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing or assisting in surgical procedures, and managing patient care. Additionally, externs will have opportunities to develop their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.
The externship duration at Southside Animal Hospital and Wellness Center typically ranges from two to eight weeks, depending on schedules. Limited externship slots are available, with priority given to students interested in practicing in Alaska after graduation.
Alaska state regulations require veterinary students to be in their final year of education and to hold a veterinary student permit before beginning an externship in the state. Instructions for obtaining the permit can be found HERE.
Veterinary students in the clinical portion of their education may be eligible for a travel/living expense stipend. For details on stipend amounts and the application process, click HERE.
