BluePearl Pet Hospital in Midtown, NY is seeking a Relief Veterinary Assistant to join our Surgery Department. The role offers hourly pay $22.19–$30.36 based on experience and competency assessment.

Responsibilities include nursing care for surgery patients, radiography, IV/SC fluids, vital-sign monitoring, and client communication. Preference for 2+ years in a veterinary hospital; rotating on-call after training.

Qualifications

• Minimum of two years in a veterinary hospital.
• Ability to work independently while contributing to a team.
• Rotating on-call schedule after training is complete.

• Assist with nursing care to surgery patients according to hospital standards.
• Perform physical exams and monitor vital signs; alert doctor when abnormal.
• Stock and maintain cleanliness in Surgery and designated areas.
• Monitor medications, side effects, and therapeutic responses.
• Perform radiography and basic lab work.
• Engage with clients during appointments, review estimates, and provide discharge instructions.
• Set up intravenous and subcutaneous fluids and manage pumps.
• Assist during surgical procedures and monitor patient response to therapy.

BluePearl Pet Hospital in Midtown, NY is seeking a Relief Veterinary Assistant to join our Surgery Department.

Pay: $22.19 - $30.36

This pay band is dependent on experience and advancement through our competency assessment tool.

A BluePearl Surgery Assistant will be responsible for some post-operative client communication and must be able to work independently while contributing to a larger team goal. Prefer to have a minimum of two or more years of experience in a veterinary hospital. A rotating on call schedule is required once training has been completed.

As a Surgery Veterinary Assistant, you will:

• Assist with nursing care to surgery patients according to hospital standards of care and core values.
• Performs physical exam; accurately counts heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort.
• Understands normal vital parameters and alerts doctor when abnormal.
• Stock, clean and maintain cleanliness in Surgery and other designated areas for the role.
• Understand classification of commonly used medications, associated side effects and appropriately monitors therapeutic response.
• Perform radiography and lab work.
• Engage with our clients during appointments, going over estimates and providing discharge instruction.
• Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrates proficiency in designated role as assigned by attending clinician and/or supervisor.
• Able to set up intravenous and subcutaneous fluids.
• Can operate all brands of intravenous fluid pumps and can troubleshoot errors.
• Able to disconnect and connect patients from intravenous fluids aseptically.
• Ability to monitor patient response to fluid therapy including signs of overload.
• Ability to assist during surgical procedures.

Our Continuing Education Plan includes $500/year reimbursement for CVT and $750/year for VTS. The Continuing Education allowance can roll over up to $1,500 for CVT and VTS associates. Non-Credentialed, full-time Paraprofessionals are eligible for an annual CE stipend of $150. Full-time CVT associates also receive 8 hours of CE paid hours each year.

Full-time VTS associates receive 12 hours of CE paid each year. Paid CE hours can be carried over year to year up to a maximum of 24 hours. Newly hired associates will receive a pro-rated amount of any CE benefit for which they are eligible.
