The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is hiring a full-time Veterinary Assistant to join our dedicated team and be part of the lifesaving work we do every day. As a Veterinary Assistant at our shelter, you’ll play a hands-on role making a difference in the lives of both animals and the people who love them. The Veterinary Assistant reports to the Assistant Shelter Operations Manager – Veterinary Support at the Racine campus. Key accountabilities:

  • Provide surgery prep and post operative care
  • Assist with movements of patients, recovery of patients, and general surgery flow
  • Correctly and efficiently execute treatments, diagnostics, and medication under the direction of shelter veterinarians
  • Maintain detailed and accurate medical records in our animal management software
  • Perform basic lab work
  • Facilitate foster appointments under the direction of shelter veterinarians
  • Assist veterinarians with appointments and procedures
  • Vaccinate animals in accordance with organizational protocols
  • Maintain and clean surgical equipment
  • Respond to internal and external client inquires
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Experience in veterinary field is a plus

  • Able to successfully meet the physical demands of the job, which include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Must be able to routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Euthanasia by injection certified or willing to complete the course when offered
  • Ability to navigate emotional aspects of animal welfare work.

Hiring range: $15.12-$16.80/hour

It was founded in 1879 and operates shelters in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Door, Brown, and Kenosha Counties, as well as a Spay/Neuter Clinic in West Allis. The organization offers adoption services, youth programs, low-cost veterinary resources, retail stores, volunteer programs, dog training classes, and much more. The Milwaukee shelter also houses the state’s busiest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
