Job summary

Nashville Veterinary Specialists in Nashville, TN is seeking an experienced Veterinary Assistant to join our Overnight ICU Team. This full-time position focuses on hands-on patient care, monitoring, treatments and daily nursing tasks for ICU patients in a specialty and emergency hospital.

Teamwork is essential as you work three consistent 12-hour night shifts (6:00 PM–6:00 AM) with shift and weekend differentials. Minimum 3 years in veterinary care, ICU or emergency experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant, preferably in emergency medicine.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of veterinary medicine, including triage, disease processes, pharmacology, restraint, diagnostic imaging, phlebotomy, anesthesia, laboratory equipment, and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills with clients and veterinary team members.
  • Ability to adapt to fast-paced ICU environment and to lift/carry animals weighing 50+ pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on patient care and support the veterinary medical team in the ICU.
  • Assist with patient monitoring, treatments, diagnostics, restraint, and daily nursing care.
  • Support Veterinary Technicians and veterinarians with care of hospitalized and critical patients.
  • Assist with patient care procedures based on training and experience.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and stocked patient care areas.
  • Follow hospital protocols for patient safety, sanitation, and infection control.
  • Accurately document patient care and communicate observations to the medical team.
  • Provide compassionate and professional client communication when appropriate.
  • Adapt to changing needs of individual patients in a fast-paced ICU environment.
  • Contribute to a positive, respectful, and collaborative overnight hospital culture.

  • Eagerness to continue learning and developing veterinary skills
  • Ability to safely lift and carry animals weighing 50 pounds or more
  • Ability to handle dogs weighing up to 150 pounds
  • Fluent English speaking and reading skills required.
