Job summary

Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center in Middletown, CT is seeking an experienced overnight Veterinary Assistant for a part-time role. The ideal candidate provides basic nursing care, handles animals, and supports Veterinary Technicians in a busy inpatient setting.

We value teamwork, mentorship, and continued learning. Prior veterinary experience and comfort with overnight shifts are preferred; EzyVet/Smartflow familiarity is a plus, but not required.

Qualifications

• Prior experience working in a veterinary setting preferred.
• Experience in handling animals and performing basic animal care tasks.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact with clients and team members.
• Ability to multi-task and remain organized in a fast-paced environment.
• Compassion and patience when handling animals.
• Basic knowledge of animal behavior and medical terminology.
• Ability to work well under pressure and in stressful situations.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
• Willingness to continue learning and stay updated on veterinary practices.

Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians, Veterinary Technicians, and staff with clinical tasks.
• Provide basic nursing care and animal husbandry in the inpatient setting.
• Handle animals safely, restrain when needed, and support diagnostic procedures.
• Communicate with clients and maintain a calm, professional environment.
• Support the team in a busy, overnight schedule and ensure consistency of care.

About You:

We are seeking an experienced Veterinary Assistant who is already comfortable with basic nursing care, husbandry, handling / restraint and assisting Veterinary Technicians and other staff members in a clinical setting highly preferred. Experience with EzyVet and Smartflow are an additional plus but not required. We highly value collaboration from all staff members, so please speak up as your input is not only valued but can make a difference.

Candidates must have minimum 1 year of experience as a veterinary assistant.

Anticipated Schedule:
This is a part-time position:
Friday - either 7pm-7am or 9pm-7am
