Position Summary

CSU’s Avian, Exotic, and Zoological (AEZ) service is seeking a veterinary assistant to support the service’s active caseload during clinical receiving. The AEZ service provides specialized care for a wide variety of non-traditional species, including birds, reptiles, small mammals, and zoological animals. Using advanced diagnostics and medical techniques, our team is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of exotic and zoological patients through compassionate, high-quality veterinary care.

The AEZ Assistant supports the service by assisting with patient handling, appointment preparation, and procedural support. Responsibilities include patient transport, safe restraint during exams, and maintaining a clean, organized work environment. This position also assists with clerical tasks such as scheduling, updating patient records, and inventory management. Additionally, the assistant plays a role in teaching veterinary students by demonstrating proper handling and restraint techniques and supporting them in routine clinical tasks. This position is essential in ensuring smooth daily operations and delivering exceptional patient care within the AEZ service.

Required Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic animal handling and restraint skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work within a team.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Previous experience in veterinary or animal care settings.
  • Fear Free certification or experience handling stressed patients.
  • Interest in pursuing veterinary technician education

Essential Duties

Job Duty Category Patient Care and Service Support Duty/Responsibility

  • Supports the AEZ team by preparing exam rooms and assisting with patient handling during appointments.
  • Helps with patient transport within the hospital, ensuring safe movement from the parking lot to the exam room and treatment areas.
  • Provides restraint assistance for neurological exams and procedures, following proper handling techniques for painful or compromised patients.
  • Prepares patients for procedures by assisting with surgical clips, peri-operative care, and medication administration under supervision.
  • Maintains cleanliness and infection control standards when handling patients with potential zoonotic or infectious diseases.
  • Assists in organizing and scheduling appointments, including technician-led visits, and ensures accurate follow-up communication with clinicians.

  • Ensures accurate and timely patient record updates, including documentation of communication with clients and test submissions.
  • Assists with financial estimates for recommended treatments and procedures.
  • Helps with ordering and restocking medical supplies in exam rooms and rounds areas.
  • Manages patient discharges, ensuring proper documentation and client communication.
  • Supports pharmacy-related tasks such as processing refill requests and submitting orders.
  • Uploads and organizes patient videos and images for easy reference by the medical team.
  • Maintains cleanliness of exam rooms, rounds areas, and equipment, ensuring proper sanitation and infection control.
  • Transports laundry and sterile packs to and from Central Supply and helps maintain surgical equipment.

Percentage Of Time 30 Job Duty Category Teaching Support Duty/Responsibility

  • Assists veterinary students, interns, and residents by demonstrating proper patient restraint techniques.
  • Provides hands-on guidance in basic clinical skills such as TPRs, blood draws, and sedation monitoring.
  • Helps students understand AEZ service workflows and assists in routine patient care under supervision.
