Job summary

Kingsport Veterinary Hospital in Kingsport, TN, is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support veterinarians and technicians in daily patient care and treatment. The role includes monitoring hospitalized pets, assisting with surgeries, taking histories and vital signs, and educating clients about procedures and care.

Candidates should be able to lift up to 25 pounds, work weekends as needed, and have basic computer skills.

Qualifications

• Weekend work availability.
• Previous veterinary experience preferred.
• Basic math to calculate medication dosages.
• Basic computer skills, familiarity with MS Office.
• Strong communication with clients and team.

Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians in medicine and surgery and other tasks as needed.
• Assist with outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs and weights and provide client education.
• Prepare patients for surgery and monitor vital signs during surgery.
• Obtain blood, stool and other samples; perform in-house lab work and prepare specimens for outside labs.
• Take, develop and maintain radiographs following safety procedures.
• Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams.
• Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines and treatments as directed by the veterinarian.
• Clean and restock exam rooms, treatment and lab areas; keep public areas clean and equipment maintained.
• Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism with clients; exercise compassion with patients.
• Communicate with veterinarians and practice team including client discussions and patient plans.
• Any other duties as assigned.
