Job summary

PAWS Chicago is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support shelter veterinarians and technicians in delivering high-quality medical care for our animals. This role emphasizes skill development and opportunities for career advancement within a compassionate, team-oriented environment.

The position involves assisting with exams, vaccinations, and treatments, handling animals of all ages, and working closely with staff and volunteers to maintain a clean, safe facility.

Qualifications

• Passion for animals and animal welfare.
• Basic medical knowledge including disease symptoms and transmission.
• Knowledge of prescription medications, procedures, and processes.
• Previous experience working with animals required.
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
• Basic computer skills.
• Flexible, independent, and team-oriented in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Assist Shelter Veterinarians in medical exams, including restraint, microchipping, blood draws, and vaccinations.
• Provide care to pets from neonates to seniors.
• Monitor animals for disease, injuries, parasites, and report to veterinarians.
• Collect samples for lab tests and record results.
• Vaccinate and administer preventatives on intake and as needed.
• Prepare medications and assist with treatments.
• Assist with digital radiographs.
• Maintain a clean disease-free environment.
• Operate medical and lab equipment with proper safety.
• Collaborate with externs and volunteers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
