Job summary

PAWS Chicago is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support medical care for shelter animals. You will work closely with Shelter Medicine Veterinarians and Technicians to ensure high-quality care and opportunities for skill development and career growth.

The role involves assisting in exams, vaccinations, lab work, and treatment administration, with a focus on animal welfare and teamwork in a fast-paced shelter environment.

Qualifications

• Experience working with animals.
• Basic medical knowledge including disease symptoms and treatment.
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Assist shelter veterinarians in medical exams and procedures.
• Provide care to animals at all life stages.
• Monitor animals for health concerns and report to veterinarians.
• Collect samples and conduct basic tests; record results.
• Vaccinate and administer preventatives as needed.
• Prepare medications and assist with treatments.
• Maintain a clean, disease-free environment.
• Operate basic medical and lab equipment safely.
• Collaborate with externs and volunteers.
• Other duties as assigned.
