Job Overview

The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in providing quality care for pets, advocates for pets, educates clients on pet health, and maintains a safe hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the extra eyes, ears, and hands for veterinarians and technicians to ensure optimal pet care and maximize team productivity.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to facilitate smooth patient flow.
  • Provide professional, efficient service, including procedures that do not require veterinarian assistance, preparing for procedures, and monitoring hospitalized or surgical pets.
  • Educate clients on wellness plans, preventive care, and hospital services.
  • Obtain and record comprehensive medical histories from clients.
  • Ensure safety by following protocols, using proper restraint techniques, and maintaining clean treatment areas.
  • Assist with surgical procedures as applicable.
  • Utilize technical skills within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines.
  • Mentor other paraprofessionals.

Initiative, integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, and resiliency are essential. Must be comfortable working in a moderately noisy environment, around pets, and for extended periods at a computer. Availability for weekends and evenings is required.

Qualifications

Completion of NAVTA-approved Veterinary Assistant program or equivalent experience; High School Diploma preferred. Must be at least 18 years old for radiography duties. One year of related experience preferred.
