Job summary

Humane Fort Wayne is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support surgery, wellness services, and shelter animal health. You will assist veterinarians, manage patient records, and help ensure safe, compassionate care from intake to discharge.

We require a high school diploma (associates preferred) and the ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in varied temperatures. This is a full-time, on-site role with benefits.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associates degree preferred but not required.
  • Experience in veterinary settings is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Triage patients and communicate concerns to the veterinarian.
  • Provide hands-on medical care throughout surgical and wellness procedures.
  • Assist veterinarians during surgery and wellness exams.
  • Maintain drug logs, databases, and accurate patient records.
  • Administer vaccines, tests, medications, and treatments.
  • Maintain clean, sterile workspaces and appropriate medical inventory.
  • Monitor overall health of shelter and foster animals.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and ensure adoption-ready animals are fully vaccinated, sterilized, and microchipped.

What You’ll Do :
Surgery & Wellness Care
  • Triage patients and communicate concerns to the veterinarian
  • Provide hands-on medical care throughout surgical & wellness procedures
  • Assist veterinarians during surgery and wellness exams

  • Administer vaccines, tests, medications, and treatments

Shelter Medicine & Animal Wellness
  • Monitor overall health of shelter & foster animals
  • Administer appropriate treatments and medical care
  • Maintain accurate medical records
  • Maintain a safe, healthy, properly supplied shelter environment
  • Ensure adoption-ready animals are fully vaccinated, sterilized, and microchipped
  • Stay informed on current animal welfare practices
What You Bring
Education & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associates degree (preferred but not required)
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand or sit for 8+ hours
  • Ability to repeatedly lift 50 lbs
  • Good fine motor skills, vision, hearing, balance, and mobility
  • Ability to kneel, bend, climb, and navigate tight spaces
  • Ability to work in varying environmental temperatures
