Job description

VCA Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals (MECA) in Greenfield, WI is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join the team at our one-of-kind emergency hospital.

Schedule: Full time, night shift (6:00pm-6:00am). 12-hour shifts, 3 shifts per week ( 3 x 12 hour ). Alternating weekends and rotating holidays are required.

Compensation: $18 - $24 per hour, plus shift differential. Starting range is determined by skill set and years of experience in the field.

Come put your passion for patient care to work! Our technicians practice in a fast-paced environment, handling a mix of urgent, emergency and critical care cases. Every day, you will have the opportunity to practice, enhance and improve you skills, including:

  • Triage:Perform an initial assessment to evaluate the patient's condition quickly. This includes checking vital signs, assessing for obvious injuries or distress, and gathering information from the pet owner about the situation.

  • Assist Doctors: Collaborate closely with veterinarians to assist in exams, treatments, and medical procedures for emergency cases.

  • Venipuncture and IVC Placement: Proficiently perform venipuncture,intravenous catheter placement, and grow your advanced vascular access techniques.

  • Medication Administration: Safely and accurately administer fluids, medications, and other treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.

  • Team Collaboration: Work in conjunction with all technical staff across the hospital to ensure hospitalized patients receive optimal care. Maintain open communication with the healthcare team.

  • Nursing Care: Vigilantly monitor hospitalized patients, identifying subtle changes in their clinical status. Participate in departmental rounds and manage the maintenance of urinary catheters, nasogastric tubes, chest and abdominal tubes, as well as nasal oxygen tubes.

  • Client Education: Provide clear and concise discharge instructions to clients, ensuring they understand the care their furry family member requires after leaving the hospital.

  • Diagnostic Imaging: Operate diagnostic imaging equipment and assist in capturing radiographs and other diagnostic images.

  • Laboratory Procedures: Run diagnostics, correlate results with the clinical presentation of the patientand notify Veterinarian of results.

  • Administering Oxygen:Flow-by Oxygen, Nasal Oxygen Cannula, or Oxygen Cage.
