Banfield Pet Hospital is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to support veterinarians and technicians, advocate for pets, educate clients on health, and maintain a safe hospital environment.

You will help maximize productivity, communicate with staff to ensure smooth patient flow, and assist with procedures as allowed by state acts, while mentoring peers. This role emphasizes client education, proper medical record keeping, and safety in a busy, pet-focused hospital.

Job description

Role Overview

Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians in ensuring quality veterinary care for all pets. The role advocates for pets, educates clients on pet health, and ensures a safe and effective hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Banfield within self and team.
  • Act as the extra eyes, ears, and hands for the veterinarian and veterinary technician to maximize productivity and the best quality pet care.
  • Communicate with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and associate staff to maintain the flow of patients.
  • Provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service at all times, including performing or preparing procedures that do not require veterinarian or veterinary technician assistance.
  • Prepare work for other procedures, ensure client and pet comfort, and monitor hospitalized or surgical pets as allowed by state practice acts.
  • Educate clients about Optimum Wellness Plans, preventive care, pet health needs, hospital services, and related issues.
  • Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain proper and complete medical charts.
  • Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and associates by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas.
  • Assist with surgery as applicable, using technical skills within state practice acts and NAVTA guidelines.
  • Mentor other paraprofessionals in the hospital.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Ability to work at a computer for long periods, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate up to 50 pounds. The role may require more than 40 hours per week and includes weekends and evenings. The hospital environment has a moderately high noise level. A high level of physical fitness and confidence around animals (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles) is required.

Compensation

Pay range: $15.19 – $19.41 per hour, adjusted for experience, skill level, and education.
