Position Purpose

The purpose of this position involves providing excellent medical care to Vetco Total Care hospital patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners. The Veterinary Assistant embodies our mission and values to all clients. They set the tone for technical and customer support in the hospital and are responsible for fostering cohesion and motivation within the team.

Essential Job Functions

The incumbent must perform all duties with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Greet clients and patients, escort them into exam rooms, obtain weights and vital signs, and record in the electronic medical record (EMR). Collect patient histories and document visits.
  • Assist doctors with appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision from the veterinarian, credentialed veterinary technician, HOM, and HLOD.
  • Perform patient restraint, process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications, and maintain records.
  • Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results, and update records.
  • Help prepare patients for procedures, assist with anesthesia, monitor vital parameters, and help in recovery and discharge processes.
  • Assist in in-hospital treatments, administer medications, and perform tasks like feeding and walking canine patients.
  • Assist in training new staff and disseminate knowledge as required.
  • Maintain a clean hospital environment, perform regular cleaning as scheduled.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
  • Provide backup support at the front desk and on the phone
Supervision and Planning

In all patient care activities, the incumbent takes direct supervision from veterinarians and technical staff, and overall direction from HOM/HLOD or supervising technician.

Work Environment

Primarily conducted in the hospital, involving bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing for long periods. Significant client and pet contact.
