Job summary

The role supports animal health, diagnostic testing, reproductive health, and the artificial insemination industry in a cattle-focused setting. You will work with veterinarians, perform examinations, collect samples, assist with procedures, maintain records, and learn company systems such as AS400, Fusion, Acumatica, and Excel.

Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor's degree in veterinary technology, animal science, agriculture, or related field; or equivalent education, training, or experience.
• Experience with cattle or livestock preferred.
• Willingness to learn and work with team in a cattle-focused environment.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a positive representative of Select Sires' mission and values.
• Assist veterinarians with examinations, treatments, vaccinations, surgeries and other procedures.
• Safely restrain and handle cattle during procedures and health activities.
• Collect and prepare diagnostic samples for lab submission (blood, preputial, fecal).
• Maintain inventory and order medications, vaccines, and supplies.
• Prepare export docs and other required customer documents.
• Collaborate with the Financial Department on billing for services and supplies.
• Learn and use Select Sires systems (AS400, Fusion, Acumatica, etc.).
• Ensure clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Position Summary

Select Sires is seeking a reliable, hardworking, detail-oriented, and self-motivated Veterinary Assistant to join the Veterinary Services team.

This position offers a unique opportunity to work alongside veterinarians in an exclusively cattle-focused environment. This role supports animal health, diagnostic testing, reproductive health, veterinary procedures, and the artificial insemination industry.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technician include, but are not limited to:

• Serve as a positive representative of the Select Sires mission and core values.
• Assist veterinarians with animal examinations, treatments, vaccinations, surgeries, and other veterinary procedures.
• Safely restrain and handle cattle during veterinary procedures and animal health activities.
• Collect, identify, and prepare diagnostic samples for laboratory submission, including blood, preputial, and fecal samples.
• Maintain inventory and order medications, vaccines, diagnostic materials, personal protective equipment, and other veterinary supplies.
• Accurately prepare export documentation, embryo donor sire certificates, and other specialized customer documents.
• Assist with departmental billing by coordinating veterinary service and supply charges with the Select Sires Financial Department.
• Communicate effectively with teams and departments throughout the organization.
• Maintain a clean, organized, sanitary, and efficient work environment.
• Use Microsoft Excel and other basic computer applications to complete departmental work.
• Learn and use Select Sires systems, including AS400, Fusion, Acumatica, and other department-specific software.
• Follow established animal health, biosecurity, safety, and sanitation procedures.
• Assist with additional departmental responsibilities and operational needs as assigned.

• Previous work with cattle or other livestock.
• Experience in veterinary medicine, animal health, or reproductive management.
• Experience within the artificial insemination, cattle genetics, or animal breeding industry.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

This is a hands‑on position that involves direct work with cattle. Candidates must be able to:

• Safely halter, restrain, and handle cattle.
• Assist with veterinary procedures and animal‑handling activities.
• Collect blood and other diagnostic samples.
• Obtain blood samples by lifting a bull’s tail when necessary.
• Stand and walk for extended periods.
• Work in livestock facilities.
• Lift, carry, position, and maneuver veterinary supplies and equipment.
• Work safely in typical agricultural conditions, including exposure to dust, manure, outdoor weather, and other livestock‑facility conditions.
