Job summary

Thrive Pet Healthcare's Center for Avian & Exotic Medicine in New York, NY is seeking a Veterinary Assistant to join our team. You will work alongside veterinarians and licensed technicians, supporting pre-op, surgery, and post-op procedures in a specialized exotic animal environment.

The role offers full-time hours (30–40 per week) with a focus on accurate record-keeping, patient care, and inventory control, in a facility dedicated to avian and exotic pets.

Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of experience in animal husbandry.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; AAS or higher preferred.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods.
  • Inventory/purchasing experience preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Educate clients on medical procedures and next steps.
  • Assist DVMs and LVTs with patients during pre-op, surgery, and post-op.
  • Stock exam and treatment rooms with supplies; maintain sterile environment.
  • Record patient history and medical records in computer systems; update as needed.
  • Precisely dispense pharmaceuticals as required.
  • Place weekly inventory orders, manage on-hand inventory, receive shipments, and process returns/damaged goods.

Our Ideal Candidate

An upbeat, self-starter who is passionate about animal care, highly motivated, and pays attention to detail. Our Veterinary Assistants work side by side with our Veterinarians (DVMs) and Licensed Vet Technicians (LVTs) during procedures. A full-time position would require working between 30-40 hours a week.

Job Duties
  • Communicating and educating clients on medical procedures and next steps.
  • Assisting DVMs and LVTs with patients during pre-op, surgery, and post-op.
  • Stocking exam and treatment rooms with supplies, maintaining a sterile environment for treatment, x-ray, surgery, labs, and isolation wards.
  • Utilizing computer information systems to record patient history, update, and maintain medical records.
  • Precisely dispenses pharmaceuticals as required.
  • Place weekly inventory orders, manage on-hand inventory, receive shipments, and process returns/damaged goods.
Job Requirements

About the Hospital

We have a customized facility where exotic pets will receive state-of-the-art medical and surgical care in a peaceful and calm environment free from dogs and cats. Our team caters to birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, small ruminants, and wildlife as pets (such as squirrels, pigeons, etc.). We also offer TeleVet services for any patients that have been seen by one of our vets in the last 12 months.

Compensation negotiable based on credentials and experience with a starting rate ranging from $20-22/hr. The actual rate offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
