Position Purpose:

Veterinary Assistants provide supportive services under the direction of a senior veterinarian. This includes but is not limited to administering oral or topical medications, as allowed by NY state law; setting up equipment for treatment rooms and surgery, restraining animals, lab work, assisting in radiology cleaning of isolation rooms; interacting with the fosters and adopters.

This is a 32 hour (4 days per week) full-time position with a salary range of $20/hr to $22/hr.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:
  • Proper and effective restraining animals for the technicians and veterinarians
  • Feeding animals as appropriate with Doctor’s instructions.
  • Cleaning and making sure that animals are clean and all areas are free of odors
  • Medications (as allowed by law)
  • Grooming, as needed
  • Record keeping concerning vaccinations, medications, preventative care and intakes information
  • Animal’s exercise and bathroom trips
  • Surgical instruments cleaning and prepping
  • General wellbeing of every animal under your care
  • Laundry
  • Restocking, cleaning, assisting other staff members, computer work, paper work
Qualifications:
  • At least 3 years experience as a Veterinary Assistant
  • Veterinary Assistant certification and graduate of an accredited Veterinary Assistant program.
  • High School Diploma or equivalency
Specific Work Requirements:
  • This position requires the ability to walk, bend, stand, lift, reach, stoop, carry, push and pull for at least 8 hours a day.
  • Lifting of packages and large bags of food 25-40 lbs
  • Lifting and holding animals of all sizes, including large ones
  • Visual acuity sufficient to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to restrain animals
  • Ability to attend staff meetings and training classes
  • Ability to understand the needs of the animals
