Position Purpose:

The purpose of this position involves providing excellent medical care to our Vetco Total Care full-service hospital patients and outstanding customer care to their owners. The Veterinary Assistant embodies our mission and values to all clients. They set the tone for technical and customer support in the hospital and are responsible for fostering cohesion and motivation within the team.

Essential Job Functions

The incumbent must be able to perform all the following duties with or without reasonable accommodation:

• Greet clients and patients, escort them into exam rooms, record vital signs, and document in the electronic medical record (EMR). Collect patient histories and update records.
• Assist veterinarians with appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision.
• Perform patient restraint, process lab samples, handle medications, and maintain records.
• Schedule appointments, educate clients, relay test results, and update records.
• Prepare patients for procedures, assist during anesthesia, monitor vital signs, and help with recovery and discharge.
• Administer treatments, medications, and fluids as directed, keep patients clean and comfortable, and walk dogs as needed.
• Assist in training new staff and share knowledge as required.
• Maintain a clean hospital environment.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform additional duties as assigned.
• Provide backup support at the front desk and via phone.

Supervision and Planning

Work is supervised directly by veterinarians and the Veterinary Technician, with overall direction from the HOM/HLOD or shift supervisor. The role is crucial for ensuring efficient hospital operations and high-quality patient care.

• At least 1-year experience in veterinary practice or related animal care.

Work Environment:

Primarily in the hospital, involving bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing for long periods. Significant client and pet contact.
