Position Purpose

The purpose of this position involves providing excellent medical care to Vetco Total Care hospital patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners. The Veterinary Assistant represents the mission and values to all clients. Our Veterinary Assistants set the tone for technical and customer support, fostering cohesion and motivation within the practice.

All hospital staff are responsible for performing duties that create an environment where:

Essential Job Functions

The incumbent must be able to perform all duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:

• Greet clients and patients, escort them into exam rooms, obtain weight and vital signs, and record in the electronic medical record (EMR). Collect patient histories and document visits.
• Assist doctors with appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision from the veterinarian, credentialed veterinary technician, HOM, and HLOD.
• Perform patient restraint, process laboratory samples, handle and dispense medications, and maintain the EMR.
• Schedule appointments, provide client education, relay test results, and update records.
• Help prepare patients for procedures, assist in anesthetizing, monitor vital signs during anesthesia, and assist in recovery and discharge.
• Perform in-hospital treatments including medication administration and IV fluid therapy under supervision.
• Assist in training new staff and share knowledge as required.
• Maintain a clean hospital environment following schedules and necessity.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform additional duties as assigned.
• Provide backup support at the front desk and via phone as needed.

Supervision

The incumbent receives direct supervision from veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians, and overall direction from HOM/HLOD or shift supervisor.

Planning and Problem Solving

Ensure efficient hospital operations and an optimal experience for patients and clients. Contribute to a cohesive, well-trained, motivated technical team to promote retention, patient well-being, and customer satisfaction.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no immediate supervisory duties.

Education/Experience

• Preferably 1+ years of veterinary practice experience or relevant animal care experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Compassionate, professional attitude, and demeanor during emotional and stressful situations.
• Proficient in telephone and computer skills.
• Team player willing to learn, innovate, and adapt.

Work Environment

Primarily in the hospital, requiring bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 lbs), and standing for long periods. Significant contact with clients and pets.
