Job description

Your veterinary expertise deserves a healthier balance.

VetCheck Pet Urgent Care Center is seeking experienced Veterinary Assistants to join our growing team. If you enjoy the fast pace of emergency medicine but want to avoid overnight shifts, this is the ideal opportunity.

Our urgent care centers provide a balanced schedule, supportive leadership, and a collaborative team environment. We are committed to protecting staff well-being, maintaining excellent staff-to-doctor ratios, and fostering a culture of respect and inclusion.

Responsibilities
  • Prior veterinary nursing/technician experience is required.
  • A team-oriented professional with strong communication and client education skills.
  • Quickly evaluate incoming patients, gather histories, and prioritize based on urgency.
  • Assist veterinarians with examinations, diagnostics, and emergency procedures.
  • Administer medications, fluids, vaccines, and treatments as directed.
  • Perform wound care, bandaging, catheter placement, and monitoring of anesthesia.
  • Collect and prepare lab samples (blood, urine, feces, cytology, etc.).
  • Operate and maintain diagnostic equipment such as radiology, ultrasound, and in-house lab machines.
  • Prepare patients and surgical suites for procedures.
  • Monitor anesthesia and post-operative recovery.
  • Provide intensive care support for critical patients, including continuous monitoring of vitals.
  • Clearly explain treatment plans, discharge instructions, and medication administration to pet owners.
  • Support clients with compassionate communication during stressful and emotional situations.
  • Accurately document patient records, treatments, and progress notes.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, OSHA, DEA, and state veterinary regulations.
  • Work closely with veterinarians, client service representatives, and fellow nurses to maintain smooth patient flow.
  • Participate in training, mentoring, and cross-training of team members as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of exam rooms, treatment areas, and surgical suites.
  • Assist with inventory management and proper handling of medications and supplies.
Important to Note:

This position requires flexibility to work a mix of days, evenings, weekends, and holidays to ensure the clinic is appropriately staffed and our patients receive the care they need. We value work-life balance and post schedules several weeks in advance to allow for proper planning.

Points to Consider Before Applying:
  • VetCheck leadership will advocate for our staff by supporting and assisting during difficult situations. We have a "No Tolerance Policy" meaning VetCheck will terminate the relationship with a client for any inexcusable behavior towards staff members. Our goal is to keep you safe both physically and mentally, supported, and valued. We will not tolerate any abuse from clients.
  • It's not our job to take care of pets, it is our responsibility.
  • Our staff is highly engaged, collaborative, and maintains a positive attitude. We work together to find solutions and make decisions based off what's best for each other and the hospital. A majority of our staff has been with VetCheck since the very beginning! We maintain a support staff ratio of 3-4 techs per doctor to limit burn out, compassion fatigue, and the overall stress of veterinary medicine.
  • We believe in educating our clients to be the BEST pet owners possible while practicing the gold standard of care.
  • We support, promote and advocate for diversity, equality, and inclusion in veterinary medicine. Come as you are!
Requirements
  • Prior experience in emergency or urgent care preferred; general practice experience considered.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, pharmacology, and veterinary procedures.
  • Ability to triage and recognize critical emergencies (e.g., respiratory distress, trauma, uncontrolled bleeding).
  • Skilled in venipuncture, IV catheter placement, medication administration, and anesthesia monitoring.
  • Competence with diagnostic tools such as digital radiology, laboratory equipment, and monitoring devices.
  • Excellent communication skills with both clients and team members, especially under pressure.
  • Compassionate and empathetic approach toward patients and their owners.
  • Strong attention to detail with accurate recordkeeping and adherence to protocols.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment while maintaining composure.
  • Physical ability to safely handle, lift, and restrain animals of varying sizes.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by urgent care operations.
  • Emotional resilience and compassion when assisting clients during stressful or end-of-life situations.
  • Commitment to teamwork, collaboration, and ongoing professional development.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills; must be able to clearly explain clinic policies, services, and financial details.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and willingness to assist colleagues in different roles when needed.
  • Once proficient in this role, you'll be expected to support cross-training initiatives. At VetCheck, we value growth and teamwork, and encouraging every team member to expand their skills while helping others do the same.
