Veterinary Assistants play an integral role in the care of patients, clients, and referring veterinarians at CVCA. They work directly with the cardiologist to provide medical support, enhance efficiency by handling technical tasks, record keeping, and communication. They also communicate with and educate clients about their pet's health.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities
- Provide compassionate care to clients and patients.
- Perform duties following company policies and procedures.
- Support the doctor by ensuring appointment flow, emergency care, and accurate medical records.
- Maintain exam rooms and treatment areas.
- Maintain a clean and organized facility, including cleaning and organizing as needed.
- Perform physical histories, blood pressure checks, and patient triage.
- Assist with surgical and interventional procedures, including monitoring vital signs of anesthetized patients.
- Administer oral medications and restrain pets safely and compassionately.
- Perform venipuncture, ensure proper blood work handling, and record keeping.
- Take radiographs and perform electrocardiograms.
- Manage Holter placements, data submission, and results processing.
- Prepare medications and prescriptions, ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
- Discharge patients, review diagnosis and follow-up care, and ensure clients receive medications or prescriptions.
- Maintain accurate medical records and manage communication tools such as message boards.
- Troubleshoot office equipment and assist team members as needed.
- Contribute to training new employees and support team collaboration.
- Communicate effectively with team members, clients, and referring veterinarians.
- Answer phones, address client inquiries, and assist client service tasks.
- Handle client billing and payments.
- Adhere to scheduled work hours and maintain professionalism, even during stressful situations.
- Travel to secondary offices if required.
- Perform additional delegated tasks as assigned.
Education/Experience/Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 18 years old.
- At least two years of experience as a veterinary assistant.
- Computer literacy, including MS Office, Google Drive, and basic software.

- Experience with office functions in a busy practice.
- Strong attention to detail and confidentiality.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to handle high call volumes and stressful situations calmly.
- Compassionate with animals and capable of restraining large or difficult pets.

- Physical ability to lift animals up to 40 pounds and perform related tasks.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including 10-hour shifts, and travel if necessary.
