Job Overview

Relief Veterinarian (Locum) – Pay Range: $120–$140/hour. Primary purpose is to provide preventative care, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and injuries of pets.

Essential Responsibilities and Tasks
  • Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and associates by using safe restraining techniques and maintaining clean, sterile, and organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs.
  • Obtain relevant information and history from clients and maintain accurate medical records.
  • Educate clients about preventative care, pet health needs, diagnosis or treatment, hospital services, and related information.
  • Create and provide professional, efficient, and exceptional service including prescribing and administering preventative care and diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries.
  • Effectively communicate diagnosis and treatment plans to the veterinary medical team and clients.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, including proper maintenance of the controlled substance inventory log.
  • Understand and follow state guidelines regarding duties of veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree.
  • License in good standing with the applicable state veterinary board.
  • Drug Enforcement Agency license required.
  • Proven ability to perform all basic surgeries with standard instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to multi‑task, master communication skills, and organizational ability.
  • Strong surgical, problem‑solving, client‑service, intellectual, and compassionate commitment to pet care.
  • Mathematical ability to perform calculations and computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, etc.
  • Management ability to enforce policies and encourage teamwork.
  • Initiative, integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, and resilience under stress.
Special Working Conditions
  • Confidence around pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.).
  • Work hours may exceed 40 hours per week including weekends and evenings.
  • Requires ambulatory ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires good hand‑eye coordination, dexterity, and visual acuity.
  • Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch and to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and medications.
  • Minimal travel for vendor visits and associate education.
