Position

Locum Veterinarian

Pay Range

$120 – $170 per hour (dependent on experience, skill level, location).

Job Purpose

The primary function of the Locum Veterinarian is to provide preventative care, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and injuries of pets.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensuring the safety of pets, clients, and associates by using safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile, organized treatment areas.
  • Obtaining relevant information and history from clients and maintaining comprehensive medical records.
  • Educating clients about preventative care, pet health needs, diagnoses, treatments, and hospital services.
  • Providing professional, efficient, and exceptional service, including prescribing and administering preventive care and diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries.
  • Effectively communicating diagnosis and treatment plans to the veterinary medical team and clients.
  • Ensuring compliance with local, state, federal laws, including maintaining the controlled substance inventory log.
  • Adhering to state guidelines regarding the duties of veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians.
  • Performing other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree, with a license in good standing with the applicable state veterinary board.
  • License with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
  • Proved ability to perform all basic surgeries using standard medical instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to multitask, communicate effectively in written and spoken English, and demonstrate strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.
  • Provision of client‑service skills, compassionate commitment to pet care, and technical competencies such as surgical skills and basic math.
  • Proficiency with computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook).
  • Capability to enforce policies, maintain morale, and coach staff.
  • Integrity, cooperativeness, flexibility, independence, and resilience in stressful situations.
Eligibility & Working Conditions
  • Confident around a variety of pets (dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.).
  • Work over 40 hours per week, including weekends and evenings.
  • Proficiency in reasoning, memory, mathematics, and English language skills.
  • Moderate noise level and requires ambulatory skills.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lb and perform manual tasks.
  • Good visual acuity and hand‑eye coordination.
  • Exposure to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances.
  • Minimal travel for vendor visits and education.
