About the Role

We are looking for a Veterinarian to join our team and play an important role in supporting CAC’s mission.

In this position, you will:
  • Provide medical care to our shelter animals and perform spay and neuter and other common surgeries.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

Your day‑to‑day may include:

  • Perform physical exams, vaccinations, and general surgery, including but not limited to spay/neuter and soft tissue surgery
  • Provide emergency and critical care to shelter animals
  • Lead a team of Vet Techs and Assistants responsible for monitoring the health of our shelter animals
  • Contribute to the establishment of shelter medicine best practice animal care and treatment and infectious disease prevention
  • Evaluate and make recommendations for the humane euthanasia of irremediably suffering animals in accordance with CACHS policies and protocol
  • Perform humane euthanasia for animals irremediably suffering (for medical reasons and behavioral reasons that impact public safety)
  • Perform necropsy exams for our Dog Warden Officers, as well as, provide comprehensive documentations, recommendations, and interpretations of findings
  • Prepare documentation and provide expertise to our Dog Warden Department on‑site, in the field, and in court
  • Communicate with veterinarians in the community regarding the care and ongoing treatment of CACHS animals that have been transferred to their practice
  • Effectively communicate the medical condition and status of CACHS animals to the public and shelter partners as requested by shelter management
  • Maintain medical records in Animals First software
  • Work with the Medical Director to monitor and update shelter standards and protocol of animal care, handling, and sanitation.
  • Assist with the development of public‑facing veterinary care for the HASS (Human Animal Support Services program for the purpose of pet retention and community support)
  • Stay current on shelter medicine best practice and follow shelter protocol
  • Perform any other shelter duties as directed by the Medical Director or Shelter Director
  • Supporting additional organizational needs as they arise

Qualifications

Preferred/Required:

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must be a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
  • Must have a veterinary license in the State of Ohio
  • Must possess a DEA license for use at the shelter
  • Must receive continuous and ongoing training and education
  • Stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
  • Adherence to the applicable provisions of the Organization’s Policies & Procedures, the HR Policy Manual, and any other procedures, rules, regulations, and policies set forth by appropriate authorities
  • Must have personal integrity and remain free of felony convictions
  • Must maintain confidentiality
  • Experience caring for animals in a safe, effective, and humane manner
  • Experience with a variety of animals including cats, dogs and small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and other exotics with training provided.
  • Knowledge of shelter medicine best practice
  • Knowledge of and commitment to high levels of customer service
  • Knowledge of animal behavior patterns and disease symptoms
  • Training in high‑volume spay/neuter surgery
  • Familiarity with large animals preferred but not required
  • Prior shelter or kennel experience preferred but not required

  • Exposure and handling unvetted animals and their waste is frequent.
