Job summary

The Veterans Service Officer (VSO) provides information, guidance, and advocacy to Veterans and their dependents seeking Federal, state, and local benefits. The role includes interviewing clients, evaluating eligibility, assisting with claims, and connecting clients with appropriate resources.

VSOs work collaboratively as part of a team. This position may require irregular hours and use of the employee’s personal vehicle for travel.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Business, Law, or related field and two years of relevant experience.
• Three years of job experience in a related field.
• Ability to obtain required certification/accreditation within a designated timeframe.
• Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or the ability to learn

Responsibilities

• Interview Veterans and eligible dependents to assess needs and advise on potential benefits; provide referrals to outside agencies when appropriate.
• Assist with preparing, filing, and following up on Federal, State, and County benefit applications.
• File and monitor Veterans’ claims to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Build and maintain professional relationships with local agencies and organizations serving Veterans.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge and resources related to Veterans benefits, programs, and medical facilities.
• Assist with coordinating the Veterans Affairs transportation program.
• Draft correspondence and respond to inquiries regarding Veterans-related matters.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
