Qualifications

  • Honorable discharge required; active, full-time military service.
  • Six years of experience in veterans service work, public benefits or HR; OR six years in any field plus three years in veterans service work.
  • Bachelor's degree plus three years in veterans service work, public benefits or HR; OR Master's degree plus two years in veterans service work.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as office manager to assist subordinates in the more complex aspects of governing laws and regulations.
  • Counsel veterans and dependents regarding entitlement under state and federal laws; assist with forms and monitor claims processing.
  • Maintain current records and prepare periodic reports reflecting total office production.
  • Attend training and continuing education classes to maintain accreditation.

We’re looking for a Veterans Assistance Supervisor to join our team. This position is located in Calcasieu Parish. The Veterans Assistance Counselor Supervisor will serve as the office manager. The Incumbent functions in a public relations capacity in the parish where assigned. Directly supervises VAC 1/2 and may supervise an Administrative Assistant. Direct supervision comes from the Regional Manager.

This position will be filled by a current, permanent, classified LDVA employee.

This job requires the incumbent to be an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Armed Forces who served on an active, full-time basis and meet one of the following qualification requirements:

  • Six years of experience in veterans service work, public benefits claims examining, social services or human resources; OR
  • Six years of full-time experience in any field plus three years of experience in veterans service work, public benefits claims examining, social services or human resources; OR
  • A bachelor's degree plus three years of experience in veterans service work, public benefits claims examining, social services or human resources; OR
  • A master’s degree plus two years of experience in veterans service work, public benefits claims examining, social services or human resources.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION: Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

Job Duties:

As a Veterans Assistance Supervisor, you'll help create a positive experience for every person who walks through our doors. In this role, you will:

  • Serve as office manager to assist subordinates in the more complex aspects of governing laws and regulations. Study all new laws and regulations passed by the federal and state governments, and those made by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Conducts personal interviews and counsels veterans and their dependents regarding entitlement under state and federal laws. Assist veterans and their dependents in completing a variety of forms, gather supporting documentary information, and monitor the processing of claims through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs' computer system and other government entities that provide benefits, to a justifiable conclusion.
  • Maintain current records on all transactions and file correspondence in veterans' files or other proper place; prepare and submit periodic written reports reflecting the total office production
  • Attends all training and continuing education classes to maintain accreditation.
Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Promotional, open only to current permanent classified LDVA employees.

Career Progression: This position doesnotparticipate in CPG.

Work Schedule: Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday.

Compensation: The starting pay for this position is $26.05/hr. (Special Entrance Rate); $2.00 work incentive pay (premium pay) upon completion of TRIPS Certification
