Veni-Puncture Technician/Phlebotomist #Full Time

The 61st Street Service Corporation provides administrative and clinical support staff for ColumbiaDoctors. This position supports ColumbiaDoctors, one of the largest multi-specialty practices in the Northeast, comprising over 2,800 physicians, surgeons, dentists, and nurses across more than 240 specialties and subspecialties.

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Manager, the Phlebotomist performs all functions to ensure the professional, accurate, and efficient processing of specimens and patients. The role requires flexible hours and excellent customer service skills. The Phlebotomist has direct patient contact, creating an atmosphere of trust and confidence, explaining procedures, and drawing blood specimens safely, accurately, and following all established protocols.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Perform veni-puncture, finger sticks, and heel punctures on adults and pediatric patients.
  2. Process blood specimens by accessioning, centrifuging, and packaging for transport.
  3. Coordinate specimen pick-ups and track specimens as needed.
  4. Use sterile and precautionary procedures when drawing specimens; properly identify patients before collection.
  5. Follow all ColumbiaDoctors’ policies including Patient Verification, Specimen Collection, Labeling, and Temperature Monitoring.
  6. Adhere to specimen handling guidelines without deviation.
  7. Verify patient identity accurately to ensure safety and test accuracy.
  8. Label all specimens legibly and accurately with all required information.
  9. Explain urine and stool sample collection procedures to patients, emphasizing proper collection importance.
  10. Follow universal precautions during collection procedures.
  11. Disinfect and maintain the collection area for safety and cleanliness.
  12. Recognize signs of adverse reactions and follow protocols to ensure patient safety, documenting incidents appropriately.
  13. Ensure specimen integrity from collection to courier pickup.
  14. Prepare specimens for pickup and follow up if couriers are delayed.
  15. Manage inventory and supplies for specimen collection and station operation.
  16. Train new staff members.
  17. Assist with special projects as needed.
  18. Communicate insurance and financial responsibilities when applicable.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • License/Certification: Phlebotomy Technician or Credentialed Medical Assistant.
  • Experience in phlebotomy preferred.
  • Strong customer service skills with tact, respect, and sensitivity.
  • Excellent relationship management, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse staff and patient population.
  • EPIC experience preferred.
  • Experience in a medical office or customer service environment preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Hourly Rate Range: $19.23 - $28.85

Salary offers will be based on experience, skills, training, and education.
