Remote: This role is categorized as remote. The successful candidate may be based anywhere in the United States and is not expected to report to a GM worksite unless directed by their manager.

The Role

The Safety Assurance for Effective Autonomous Driving Software (SAFE-ADS) department is part of the Global Product Safety, System, and Certification (GPSSC) organization at GM. This department serves as the central body for automated driving system (ADS) safety, bringing together expertise from across the company to establish a comprehensive safety case. GM's vision is zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion — with AV safety at the core of this vision.

Our scope spans multiple organizations within GM, requiring us to work directly with executive leaders, their teams, and strategic partners to develop and deploy safe autonomous capabilities. As the AV Safety Case Lead, you will report directly to the head of AV Safety Strategy and Assessment, leading efforts across GM, engaging with regulatory bodies and external consultants to develop, deliver, and improve the safety case for autonomous capabilities worldwide.

What You'll Do

Strategy and Execution

  • Define the vision, strategy, and roadmap to achieve safety case completeness supporting program launch.
  • Establish program governance for safety case development, support executive forums, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Lead executives and key partners through decision-making processes to meet launch goals while maintaining high safety standards.
  • Guide a core program team through safety case development, potentially including hiring direct reports for advisory or coordination roles.
  • Ensure team members operate as accountable sub-program leads with cross-functional support.
  • Utilize artifact and planning tools to synthesize requirements, evidence, and timelines, integrating Agile and waterfall methodologies.
  • Balance technical insights with strategic intuition to allocate resources effectively and adapt to new information.
  • Manage program milestones, timelines, risks, and mitigation strategies.
  • Develop appropriate processes to balance structure and flexibility.

Technical

  • Apply technical judgment in working with cross-disciplinary engineering teams, decomposing complex challenges into measurable risks.
  • Establish traceability from safety claims, arguments, and evidence.
  • Drive accountability through clear communication, metrics, and a culture of safety excellence.
  • Demonstrate GM behaviors and safety professionalism in all activities.

Additional Details

This job is not eligible for relocation benefits; costs would be the responsibility of the candidate.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's in Engineering or related field
  • 10+ years industry experience, with proven program management skills (technical preferred)
  • Experience leading large-scale, fast-paced programs across multiple teams and organizations
  • Strong consensus-building skills across functions
  • Self-motivated with a passion for team development and process improvement
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguity and simplify complex situations
  • Passion for autonomous vehicle technology and safety

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA or similar qualification
  • Technical experience with autonomous vehicles or high-quality product development from design to launch
  • Experience with Safety Case development in robotics, aerospace, or transportation
  • System engineering experience including requirements management and conformance documentation

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary ranges from $160,200 to $245,400 annually, with potential bonuses based on performance. GM offers comprehensive health, dental, vision, retirement, and other benefits to support your well-being and work-life balance.
