Vehicle Maintenance Worker 400 (Trainee)

The City of Lansing is seeking a skilled Vehicle Maintenance Worker Trainee to join the Fleet Services Division. This is a great opportunity for individuals who enjoy working with their hands and providing excellent service to maintain and repair various vehicles and equipment. The City offers a competitive wage and benefits package, including paid vacation, sick, and holiday leave.

Special Requirements:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan CDL License, Group B, with air brakes and N Endorsement or obtain this license within 90 days of hire.
  • Must participate in MDOT Drug & Alcohol program.
  • Must participate in Hepatitis B inoculation program.
  • Must participate in Industrial Truck Training and Certification.
  • Must participate in Respirator Certification.
  • Must participate in Confined Space Training.
  • Must participate in Blood Borne Pathogens Training.
  • Must pass LEIN/Law Enforcement Information Network (Fingerprinting).
  • Requires overtime for emergencies and other work assignments.
Post-Hire Requirements:

The Trainee will have completed the Mechanic Trainee Program upon achieving:

  • State Certification Master Heavy, Level I
  • ASE Master Medium/Heavy Certification, Level II
  • Proficiency in welding and fabrication
  • Proficiency in repairing Sweeper, Packer, Dump truck, Aerial Platform Trucks, Firetrucks, and Medic trucks
  • Evaluation by Fleet Manager at 30, 60, 90, and 180 days, and every 6 months thereafter until completion
  • Completion of the training program within two years of starting
Ideal Candidates Will Possess:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two years of experience in preventative maintenance of vehicles, trucks, and equipment
Essential Position Functions Include but Are Not Limited To:
  • Perform preventive maintenance on City vehicles and equipment
  • Assist in receiving, inspecting, and stocking parts and supplies
  • Change tires on fleet vehicles
  • Record notes on work orders and indicate repairs and defects
  • Use cutting and welding equipment following safety procedures
  • Pick up and deliver vehicles, parts, and supplies
