Job summary

Rumpke Waste and Recycling is seeking a Vehicle Maintenance Foreman to lead the maintenance program for our truck fleet in Columbus, OH. The role focuses on inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance to keep vehicles safe and compliant.

The position requires 2–3 years of heavy truck repair experience, proficiency with repair manuals and diagnostic software, and the ability to operate with safety and quality in mind. CDL B and DOT card are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2–3 years of heavy truck and diesel engine maintenance experience.
  • Experience using repair manuals, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Waste industry experience preferred.
  • CDL B and DOT Medical Card preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Regularly communicate with management regarding the status of vehicles, containers, and equipment.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance per company schedules and standards.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical issues and perform proper repairs.
  • Ensure safe maintenance in compliance with regulations and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate records in SAP and manage parts usage.
  • Train technicians to ensure proper completion of duties.
  • Perform routine housekeeping and assist in other shop areas as needed.

Shift

Shift: 2pm-4am Monday-Friday

Vehicle Maintenance Foremen provide leadership and direction to the maintenance staff. This position is a working foreman and will regularly perform maintenance duties. Foremen are responsible for performing inspections, diagnostic testing, repairs, and maintenance on the vehicles to ensure trucks are safe on and off the road.

Responsibilities of Position:
  • Regularly communicate with management regarding the status of vehicles, containers, and/or other equipment
  • Ensure repairs to vehicles are completed per company maintenance schedules
  • Ensure proper diagnosis and troubleshooting of mechanical issues are completed and proper repairs are made
  • Ensure all repairs to vehicles, equipment, and related components are completed in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies
  • Ensure preventive maintenance programs are followed to company standard
  • Inspect, repair, and/or overhaul vehicle support systems, such as electrical, air, hydraulics and brake systems
  • Perform roadside repairs and adjustments
  • Ensure all safety devices on vehicles are in good working order
  • Responsible for instructing personnel on proper maintenance procedures and preventive maintenance practices
  • Train and assess technicians to ensure proper completion of duties
  • Perform required administrative duties when necessary, such as cycle counts, parts requisitions, warranties, etc.
  • Perform routine housekeeping duties related to tools, materials, shop, and work areas
  • Assist in other areas of the vehicle maintenance shop as needed
  • Maintain accurate records (time, maintenance orders, and parts usage) in SAP
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibility:
  • This position will not manage employees
Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude for vehicle maintenance and repair
  • Ability to safely drive service vehicles and vehicles in and out of the service area, as well as a test drive
  • Must possess the necessary tools to perform assigned tasks
  • Familiarity with using a computer and diagnostic software
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language well enough to communicate, understand, and respond to questions, directions, traffic signs, signals, and safety training
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to be able to communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external customers
  • Additional skills may be required to perform additional task(s) specific to work location, department, or line of business
  • Professionally interact with internal and external customers
Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:
  • Minimum 2-3 years performing repair and maintenance on heavy trucks and diesel engine vehicles, equipment, and related components
  • Experience using repair manuals, wiring (electrical) diagrams, and schematics necessary to troubleshoot or repair vehicle or component failure
  • Waste industry experience preferred
  • Ability to obtain CDL B is preferred
  • Ability to obtain valid DOT Medical Card is preferred
Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:
  • Frequently lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 35 lbs
  • Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 75 lbs
  • Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 100 lbs
  • Continuously working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
  • Continuously working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
  • Continuously stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
  • Occasionally climbing and/or balancing
  • Continuously standing/walking
  • Rarely sitting
Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:
  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste
  • Ability to travel between offices, as required
  • Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver's license (if applicable)
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language
