Job Summary

The University of Utah is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Vehicle & Forklift Operator to support warehouse operations and receiving across university facilities. This role is responsible for operating forklifts, box trucks, and other large vehicles to transport, load, and unload materials used by academic, administrative, and research units. The ideal candidate has a strong commitment to safety, attention to detail, and experience working in a dynamic warehouse or logistics environment.

This position will assist and fill in for other roles and must be willing to cross-train and learn various skills and responsibilities. This job plays an essential role in the receiving, movement and handling of materials that support the mission and daily operations of the University.

Responsibilities

Vehicle & Forklift Operation:

  • Safely operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and related material handling equipment to load and unload freight.

  • Operate large vehicles such as box trucks or flatbeds for delivery and transport of university assets, supplies, and surplus materials.

  • Ensure vehicles are loaded according to safety protocols and weight distribution guidelines.

Transportation & Delivery:

  • Transport goods between warehouse facilities and university departments, labs, and other campus locations.

  • Ensure timely delivery and proper handling of sensitive, oversized, or hazardous items.

  • Secure loads for transport and verify delivery documentation.

Warehouse Support:

  • Assist in organizing and maintaining warehouse spaces, including staging areas and dock operations.

  • Perform receiving, shipping, and storage functions as needed.

  • Support inventory control and assist with material documentation and labeling.

Maintenance & Compliance:

  • Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections and report maintenance or safety issues promptly.

  • Maintain clean and safe vehicles and equipment in accordance with University and OSHA safety standards.

  • Adhere to all University of Utah policies and local/state transportation regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

Six months experience operating commercial motor vehicles (over 26,000 lbs. GVW ) or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); a valid Utah Commercial Drivers License class A or B; an airbrake license; Department of Transportation ( DOT ) medical card; proof of insurability; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Ability to pass a drug /alcohol test required. During employment, must submit to random drug & alcohol testing. Dependent upon department of hire one or more of the following endorsements may be required: HAZMAT , Tanker, Passenger. The ability to move heavy objects (up to 100 lbs.) may be required. This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.
