Description Of Work

This position with NCDOT offers full, competitive salaries and many career development opportunities.

This position will serve as a lead worker and perform semi-skilled and skilled small engine, automotive, heavy equipment and/or tire repair work. Assist as a fill-in for the shop supervisor in his absence. Employees perform a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving the service, inspection, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of mechanical systems for gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment. Work ranges from inspection and service to complex mechanical and electrical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software; conducting failure analysis; and calibration, adjustment, and operation of engine diagnostic tools. Work is performed under general supervision and may involve leading a team with limited supervision.

The work is located in Catawba County Equipment Shop. Applications must be received by 11:59 pm on the closing date.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must demonstrate experience in:

  • Heating and A/C repairs including electronic and vacuum controls
  • Electrical/electronic diagnostics and repair on trucks and heavy equipment
  • Hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds
  • Troubleshooting brake components on various equipment
  • Complex electrical/electronic systems troubleshooting
Additional Expectations

The candidate should be able to perform a variety of diagnostic and repair tasks, including preventive maintenance, brake systems, steering, suspension, tires, electrical systems, hydraulics, and more. Must be able to operate Class A CDL equipment with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker endorsement or obtain it within 360 days. Safety shoes are required within 30 days of employment. The candidate must furnish mechanic tools and demonstrate safety leadership.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

High school diploma or GED and three years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III, or Universal technician may be required.
