The State of South Carolina is seeking a Mechanic Supervisor to assist in inspections, supervise mechanics, and provide training. This role requires a high school diploma and two years of relevant experience. The successful candidate will ensure maintenance tasks are completed efficiently and safely, contributing to the Office of Transportation's objectives.
The person in this position will assist the Foreman in conducting thirty-day, six-week, and annual inspections; ensure that mechanics correct inspection failures and file reports in accordance with state policies and guidelines. They will ensure all inspections, technician follow-ups, and reports are complete, accurate, and timely. As directed by the Foreman, work with mechanics to evaluate and identify training needs to help maintain and update their skills, and make recommendations on how this training can be provided. Provide hands-on training and mentoring to mechanics as needed.
Assist the Foreman with scheduling work for mechanics to ensure timely completion of maintenance tasks. Monitor mechanic workloads and recommend adjustments to the Foreman. Supervise mechanics, as assigned, to ensure shop facilities, personal protective equipment, shop equipment, and grounds are maintained in a neat, clean, and safe condition. Ensure shop repair equipment is operational and report any repairs needed, following up to ensure timely completion.
Monitor the use of parts and supplies in coordination with the Foreman to maintain adequate inventory levels for preventive maintenance, general repairs, and inspections. Provide direct supervision of maintenance services and hands-on mechanical assistance to support the shop’s mission and cover absences of the Foreman or mechanics. Oversee the duties of Mechanic III (Fuel/Lube Technicians) related to fueling, lubrication, and tire replacement. Support the school bus maintenance shop’s mission and the Office of Transportation’s objectives as instructed by the Foreman and/or County Supervisor.
This position is located in the Office of Transportation/Richland Bus Shop.
Work experience involving the independent performance of job duties related to vehicle maintenance and repair is required. A high school diploma or equivalent and two years of automotive or related repair experience are required, or any combination of training and experience that demonstrates the necessary skills and abilities. The role requires the ability to lift objects weighing 50 pounds and move objects weighing 125 pounds over a distance of 30 feet. Candidates must be able to operate power, hydraulic, and electronic equipment.
Must possess or obtain within 120 days a valid Class A or B CDL with Tank Vehicle, Passenger, and Air Brake endorsements, Tanker Operation certification, and pass a criminal background check. Successful candidates will be offered conditional probationary employment, during which they must pass a drug screening and the SDE/USDOT medical exam.
