Today, VCU Tappahannock Hospital is dedicated to advancing healthcare within our community and neighboring counties, guided by VCU Health's commitment to excellence, affordability, and community impact. Situated in the idyllic Middle Peninsula, our hospital serves the Northern Neck region, renowned for its quaint charm and leisurely summers along the picturesque Rappahannock River.

Job Overview

The Clinical Nurse position integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family. This position assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. It also provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level.

Responsibilities
  1. Deliver and accurately document direct, age-specific care to patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
  2. Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
  3. Recognize changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately.
  4. Mobilize resources to meet the individualized needs of patients and families.
  5. Assume leadership responsibilities at the unit level.
  6. Serve as a role model in a clinical setting.
Licensure and Certification Requirements

Clin I, Clin II, Clin III: Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state.

Experience

Required:

  1. Clin I: N/A
  2. Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
  3. Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience

Preferred:

  1. Clin I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice.
  2. Clin II, Clin III: Academic Health Care Experience; Experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice.
Education/Training

Required:

  1. Clin I, Clin II, Clin III: Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing.

All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date unless grandfathered under previous requirements.

Preferred:

  1. Clin I, Clin II, Clin III: Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program.
  2. Clin III: Certification in specialty area.
Independent Actions Required
  1. Follow documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
  2. Practice within the boundaries of the regulations governing the practice of nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  3. Practice guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards.
  4. Follow VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Clin I, Clin II, Clin III: Organize work and delegate and supervise others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.

Physical Requirements

Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs. Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances.

Activities: Prolonged standing, frequent bending, walking, climbing, reaching.

Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, clear speaking, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.

Emotional: Fast-paced environment, able to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions.
