Our Medicine Specialty Unit is a 32-bed unit caring for a mix of acute and intermediate care patients, including a specialized focus on sickle cell disease. Nurses receive advanced education on managing sickle cell crises and collaborate with hospitalist teams to treat diagnoses such as sepsis, respiratory failure, kidney and liver injuries, CHF exacerbation, and diabetes complications. Responsibilities include educating patients and facilitating safe care transitions.

Job Roles:

Clinical Nurse I: Assists with basic patient care, supports health promotion, and begins developing leadership skills. Delivers age-specific care based on medical orders.

Clinical Nurse II: Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills, applies knowledge to specific patient populations, and intervenes appropriately for changes in patient status. Assumes leadership roles.

Clinical Nurse III: Provides expert clinical knowledge, mentors others, and anticipates patient needs. Serves as a role model and leader in the unit.

Requirements:
  • Virginia RN licensure or eligible/compact state
  • Current RN license, AHA BLS HCP certification
  • Experience: Clin I - none; Clin II - 12-24 months; Clin III - 3+ years
  • Education: Diploma/Associate's Degree (Clin I-III); Bachelor's Degree preferred; Clin III - specialty certification
Additional Details:
  • Follows physician/provider orders within Virginia regulations
  • Delegates and supervises staff as appropriate
  • Works all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with schedule flexibility
  • Physical requirements include lifting, exposure to hazards, and physical activity
