Job Description

The Clinical Nurse II role demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and begins to apply this knowledge to a specific patient population. Responsibilities include assisting the healthcare team with illness and injury prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort provision. The role involves recognizing changes in patient conditions and intervening appropriately, mobilizing resources to meet patient and family needs, providing direction, education, and leadership at the unit level. Delivering and accurately documenting age-specific care based on medical orders and multidisciplinary plans, and safely administering prescribed medications while identifying potential interactions are essential duties.

The Clinical Nurse III role requires demonstrated clinical knowledge at the unit level with application to a specific patient population. Responsibilities mirror those of the Clinical Nurse II but also include anticipating patient condition changes, serving as a role model, and providing guidance and education in a clinical setting. Delivering and documenting age-specific care and safely administering medications are also key responsibilities.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible/compact state for Clin I, II, III
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
Experience
  • Clin I: N/A
  • Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
  • Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience
Preferred Experience
  • Clin I: Experience as LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in an acute care setting or relevant area
  • Clin II, III: Academic healthcare experience; experience with similar patient populations
Education/Training
  • Diploma or Associate Degree from an approved nursing program for all levels
  • All RNs without a Bachelor's degree must enroll in an RN to BSN program within two years and complete it within five years unless grandfathered
Preferred Education/Training
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher
  • Clin III: Certification in a specialty area
Independent Actions
  • Follows physician/licensed provider orders
  • Practices within Virginia nursing regulations
  • Guided by ANA Code of Ethics and national standards
  • Adheres to VCUHS policies and procedures
Supervisory Responsibilities

Organizes work, delegates, and supervises team members including RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, and unit staff.

Additional Requirements

Clinicians work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with schedules determined by management. Schedules may be adjusted as needed.

Work Schedule
