Job description

The opportunity

You’ll work as part of a high-performing team on a broad range of clients and assignments that will challenge and develop your skills. You’ll be encouraged and expected to take accountability and make a meaningful impact.

Your key responsibilities

You will be responsible for managing multiple client engagements and supporting the development of the VAT compliance practice at EY Romania. Additionally, you will build and lead a team of tax consultants working on these assignments.

As a Senior Consultant, your responsibilities include working with clients where you act as the assistant VAT controller for VAT compliance outsourced to EY, including:

  • Staying informed about general business and economic developments and understanding the client’s business and policies. Collaborating with the client and engagement team to understand their VAT needs,
  • Acting as the point of contact—liaising with international clients and colleagues regarding Romanian VAT compliance,
  • Coordinating VAT compliance projects, monitoring the quality of indirect tax data and reports,
  • Reviewing and approving indirect tax returns,
  • Following legislative and business changes to ensure systems and processes are updated,
  • Identifying issues and opportunities for process improvement,
  • Supervising and coaching junior team members,
  • Participating in training and development activities to enhance technical knowledge,
  • Working with the tax team to develop marketing and sales strategies, and implementing them; developing practical methodologies tailored to the Romanian VAT compliance market,
  • Utilizing and promoting firm-wide methodologies and software solutions,
  • Providing guidance to staff to support their professional growth, including addressing questions, offering constructive feedback, and conducting performance reviews.

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Economics or a related field, potentially with additional qualifications in fiscal matters,
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in VAT compliance, either in industry or with service providers,
  • Basic understanding of IT systems and VAT/GST reporting solutions.

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • Excellent language skills in Romanian and English; additional languages are a plus,
  • Strong cross-cultural communication skills and experience working in a virtual environment.
