Job Summary:

The Registered Vascular Sonographer (Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) requires a high level of knowledge, ability, and responsibility in patient care and the performance and preliminary interpretation of non-invasive vascular exams, including but not limited to, lower and upper extremity venous duplex exams, lower and upper extremity arterial duplex exams and pressure measurements, carotid duplex exams, and visceral duplex exams.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • HS/GED with Registered Diagnostic Sonographer or Registered Cardiac Sonographer within one year of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts plus two (2) years of experience in ultrasound, specifically vascular sonography
  • Registered Vascular Technologist within six months of employment
  • Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • Registered Vascular Technologist with the ARDMS or equivalent or Registry eligible.
  • CPR, clinical experience in Vascular Sonography
Responsibilities:
  • Performs clinical assessment and high-quality diagnostic noninvasive vascular examinations in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Follows the written policies and procedures of the vascular lab, but is capable of deviating from normal techniques when clinically necessary.
  • Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify and record appropriate anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic images.
  • Assists in student and resident education while performing examinations.
  • Responsible for the safety, mental, and physical comfort of the patient while in the sonographer's care.
  • Demonstrates proper identification of patients by asking for name and date of birth.
  • Assures the exam ordered is completed; if the exam requested is questionable, contacts the ordering physician to verify the order
  • Maintains patient privacy.
  • Maintains a clean work area and a properly stocked examination room.
  • Assures that images are stored under the correct patient’s name and medical record number.
  • Preliminary findings must be attached to the order
  • Provides an appropriate preliminary findings report and reviews questionable findings with the director/MD on time.
  • Provides positive preliminary findings in certain cases, which include but are not limited to extensive deep vein thrombosis, acute arterial occlusion, or severe carotid stenosis, to the ordering physician/nurse/PA.
  • Completes charges for exams performed with appropriate CPT and files charges in Epic.
  • Participates in the assessment of bi-monthly quality improvement.
  • Participates in quarterly quality improvement meetings.
  • Assists with the maintenance of IAC laboratory accreditation.
  • Takes calls when assigned.
  • Prompt response to pager – contacting the physician immediately when paged.
  • Return to the hospital within an hour, unless the physician requests a specific time for the exam to be done.
  • Assists in scheduling and prioritization of patient exams and aids in troubleshooting problems with scheduling or critically ill patients.
  • Checks AED and initials documents appropriately in the Crash Cart folder; orders oxygen when needed and a new crash cart before expiration.
  • Maintains all institutional training requirements.
  • Maintains all continuing medical education requirements and maintains the ARDMS registry.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
