Position Summary

The Department of Surgery at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking applications for a full-time academic vascular surgeon to serve as Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery. The Division of Vascular Surgery is one of nine clinical divisions within the Department of Surgery and is home to a diverse and accomplished group of vascular surgeons and podiatrists. The new Division Chief will be responsible for leading and advancing the clinical, research, and educational missions of the division.

This leadership position is being recruited as an open-rank, open-track appointment at a .5 to 1.0 FTE. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The ideal candidate will be a nationally recognized leader in vascular surgery, with a strong record of clinical excellence, academic scholarship, and leadership experience.

The selected candidate will oversee the division’s strategic vision, clinical operations, faculty development, and research initiatives while fostering a collaborative and inclusive culture. They will work closely with multidisciplinary teams across the institution and state to enhance patient care, build referral networks, and grow the division’s regional and national reputation.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide visionary leadership to advance the clinical, research, and educational missions of the Division of Vascular Surgery.
  2. Oversee the division’s clinical programs and maintain a high level of excellence in patient care.
  3. Mentor faculty members, residents, and fellows, ensuring a strong focus on professional development and academic growth.
  4. Promote and support research initiatives, including clinical outcomes research, health services research, translational science, and innovation in vascular surgery.
  5. Enhance collaborations with institutional, regional, and national partners to expand the division’s impact.
  6. Develop and implement strategies for faculty recruitment and retention.
  7. Maintain an active clinical practice, including expertise in both open and endovascular procedures.
  8. Support and contribute to the education of medical students, residents, and fellows.

Individuals who exhibit exceptional skills and achievements may be considered for a leadership position within the department of surgery. Leadership roles are not guaranteed and are dependent upon the current needs of our surgical service lines.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  1. Board Certified in Vascular Surgery.
  2. Completion of an ACGME-accredited 5+2 General Surgery/Vascular Surgery Fellowship or a 0+5 Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency.
  3. Post-fellowship experience in vascular surgery, with demonstrated leadership experience.
  4. Eligible for a North Carolina medical license.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
  1. Strong record of academic productivity, including research, publications, and extramural funding.
  2. Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic or healthcare setting.
  3. Expertise in complex vascular interventions, including peripheral arterial and venous disease management.
  4. A commitment to faculty development, diversity, and mentorship.

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
