The Girls’ and Boys’ Tennis Program Director is in charge of directing the varsity, JV and middle school girls’ and boys’ tennis teams and will work to create a dynamic and sustainable feeder system within each division at Cannon School. An Athletic Coach at Cannon School is responsible for motivating and teaching Cannon School athletes in a mission-aligned program to compete at the highest level and represent Cannon School by living out Cannon’s core values. The coach will work within the athletics department not only for the betterment of the tennis program, but to promote athlete participation in all sports. This position will report to the Director of Athletics.
Responsibilities
- Holds interest meetings for team prospects and encourages potential athletes to participate in the sport
- Development of a long-term program vision, plan, and teaching curriculum
- Attends all preseason and postseason individual meetings as well as staff development leadership seminars led by the Athletic Department (5-6 in person or virtual meetings per school year)
- Hold informational parent meetings at the beginning of each season
- Develop a regular practice schedule and organize practice time to provide both individual and team development
- Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate students’ athletic abilities on an ongoing basis
- Develop and execute match day strategy based on the team’s capabilities
- Mentor, support and empower all coaches in the program by including them in the practice/match planning process and overall management of the season
- Partner with Cannon Athletics staff on scheduling and equipment needs
- Share results with local media outlets and Director of Athletics by the end of competition day
- Ensure core values of Cannon School are consistently presented and enforced
- Support of multi-sport participation for student-athletes
- Promotion of balanced achievement in all areas of school life for student-athletes
- Develop off season/summer workouts for athletes
- Establish an effective communication strategy for parents, students and other key stakeholders at the school for all matters related to the program and its athletes
- Work in tandem with Athletic Training staff to properly handle injury prevention and treatment
- Coordinate Beyond the Bell programing, summer camps and weekend clinic opportunities for the community
- Work with the Admission office to connect with incoming student athletes interested in tennis; this may include face to face meetings, phone calls or attending admission events
- Display a willingness to grow and develop through coaching clinics, seminars and observation with feedback
- Must be able to arrive at least an hour before the start of competitions and on time daily for practice. Coaches are responsible for game day setup (assure court is setup according to rules and regulations)
- Work with Assistant Coach(es) to assure at least one coach is present on the bus when traveling
- Abide by the rules of the NCISAA
A minimum of 3 years of experience coaching Tennis at the high school level or higher (head coaching preferred)
Education Required
Bachelor’s degree required.
